The Tree Projects: Carboreal and the EarthX Forest

Rovaniemi, Finland, and global

The EarthX Forest, Forest No. 1 of the Trammell S. Crow Forest Series, created by Carboreal and The Environmental Xperience at EarthX in Rovaniemi, Lapland, at the edge of the Arctic Circle.

The need

Across Finland, peatlands were drained for farming. Drained peat slowly releases carbon that took thousands of years to store, so many old peat fields are a steady source of CO2 emissions. Restoring forest on that land can turn a carbon source back into a carbon sink, but only if the forest is real, measured and protected for the long term.

The project

Carboreal, a Finnish carbon sink company, plants new boreal forest on former peat fields. Its partnership with The Environmental Xperience at EarthX created the first forest in The Trammell S. Crow Forest Series, named for the Dallas philanthropist who founded EarthX.

  • About 13,000 tonnes of CO2 to be sequestered over the forest's lifetime.
  • Legally protected for at least 70 years.
  • Certified to the ISO 14064-2 standard by Kiwa.
  • Forest No. 2 is a rare tree forest at Dolphin Bay, Panama, now breaking ground with BRRI and The Panama Project.

Results

  • Announced December 10, 2025, and presented at the EarthX Congress in Dallas with a dedicated Rotary Day program.
  • The Tree Projects reports more than 4.3 million trees planted by Rotarians.
